From the President - November 2016

By Mark Reinig, PDI President

I had the privilege to attend the Employer Educator Summit held in Jefferson on October 13th.  Over 275 educators, students, employers, economic development and workforce development professionals came together for a great day-long event.  Many great speakers, table discussions and an especially enlightening presentation by the Rocket Manufacturing student group from RockValleyCommunitySchool district on how they have established a manufacturing company within the walls of the high school!  A big shout out to the Western Iowa Advantage marketing region for coordinating a great event.

The next day October 14th I participated in a career day for three high schools in the Fort Dodge area.  Spearheading the effort were Iowa Central Community College, The Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance, the Fort Dodge Community School District, St. Edmond Catholic School and Prairie Valley School District.  Over 1,400 students were in attendance choosing a career path for the day and meeting with business and industry that aligned with their choices.  The keynote speaker was Jeremy Bout, the Producer of Edge Factor TV series, Jeremy inspired the students about the future of advanced manufacturing and the role they can play.  A big shout out to Kelly Halsted and Shelly Blunk and their staffs for putting on a great career day.

On October 26th I went along with the EmmetsburgCommunitySchool DistrictsHigh School’s Tricia Reicherts Junior Chemistry class to POET’s Ethanol Plant on the southeast side of Emmetsburg.  Great tour and questions asked by the students.  Thank you to Billie Jo Joyce, Director of Economic Development with the City of Emmetsburg for setting up three tours with industries for students throughout the month.

I have attended many other events over the last several month and to list them all take up the entire PDI Post.  I look forward to sharing best practices in the coming year that are abundant across the state of Iowa within our Economic Development Organizations.
