Leading economic development at Greater IC: Nancy Bird and Evan Doyle
When Nancy Bird, President & CEO of
Greater Iowa City, Inc., and Evan Doyle, the organization's Economic Development Program Director, became involved with PDI, both saw an opportunity to connect with peers, learn from economic development professionals across Iowa, and strengthen the work they are doing in the Iowa City region.
For Bird, economic development has been the culmination of a career rooted in public policy, community planning, and public service. A native of Washington, Iowa, Bird's career has taken her from Washington, D.C., and Peace Corps service in Niger to working with communities and governments throughout the Seattle area on economic development, regional growth, and community planning initiatives. “I was always interested in political science and over the course of my early years with the U.S. Peace Corps and later working with a variety of communities, I found myself really enjoying projects that fell within the economic development realm,” Bird said. “Collaborative efforts and the camaraderie you can build are very fulfilling.” She returned to the Iowa City area in 2012 and spent 10 years as Executive Director of the Iowa City Downtown District, helping drive downtown revitalization efforts and serving a membership base of more than 500 businesses and stakeholders.
Today, Bird leads Greater Iowa City, Inc., a public-private economic and community development organization serving Johnson County. Created through the 2023 merger of two regional organizations, Greater Iowa City, Inc. serves as both the area's chamber of commerce and economic development organization.
“I enjoy the creative process of navigating an untraveled road to reach an end place with colleagues, friends, and interested stakeholders,” Bird said.
That spirit of partnership is reflected in ongoing regional efforts, including Greater IC's work alongside other organizations to support the Eastern Iowa Airport aerospace cluster strategy.
Doyle shares Bird's commitment to regional collaboration. As Economic Development Program Director at Greater Iowa City, Inc., he supports initiatives focused on regional growth and development. “Supporting our initiatives through the provision of data gave me many new insights into development that I would not have experienced otherwise,” Doyle said. “Stepping into the Economic Development Program Director role allows me to continue supporting our organization’s initiatives while simultaneously guiding responsible and impactful development for the greater Iowa City area.”
A native of Donnellson, Iowa, Doyle values the chance to make a lasting impact in Iowa's communities. “What excites me most about doing economic development work in Iowa is the opportunity to help build the future of my home state,” he said.
“Iowa is unique in that everyone is always open to new ideas to solve oftentimes very complex problems. The innovation in Iowa is extraordinary.”
Through PDI, Doyle and Bird hope to build new connections, gain fresh perspectives, and stay informed on issues shaping communities across the state. “PDI is the premier economic development association in the state,” Bird said. She hopes her membership will help her stay informed about initiatives and regulatory and policy changes across Iowa, while providing opportunities to learn from peers and share ideas. Doyle echoed that sentiment. “I hope to gain knowledge, experience, and connections,” Doyle said. “Connecting with an outstanding group of professionals from across the entirety of Iowa will allow me to learn, grow, and apply well-informed strategies to our region.”
Both are eager to exchange ideas on issues affecting communities across the state. Bird is particularly interested in learning how economic developers are helping address environmental and water quality challenges, while Doyle hopes to connect with professionals interested in data-driven decision-making and place-based economic development strategies.
